Is the post office open on Christmas?
With the holidays in full force, the spike in shipping demands overload USPS and other mail delivery services. At the same time, USPS reduces hours of operation during the holidays. Plan ahead if you need any to send mail and packages or check your PO box before Christmas.
USPS Christmas hours
Christmas Day, December 25th, is a federal holiday. All post office locations will be closed. Normal hours of operation will resume on Monday, December 27th.
Is there mail delivery on Christmas day?
USPS will not deliver regular mail on Christmas Day, December 25th. Only Priority Mail Express, USPS’s fastest delivery service, will deliver on Christmas. This is your only delivery option available for Christmas Day deliveries.
The USPS will have regular delivery on Christmas Eve, December 24th. However, hours of operation will depend on each post office. While some USPS post offices have extended hours for the holidays, others will cut back hours. To check a specific location's hours, use the Find USPS Locations tool on the USPS website and search by zip code. Any post office with limited hours will have that notated on the directory listing.
USPS New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day schedule
All USPS post office locations will be open and provide delivery on New Year’s Eve, December 31st. New Year’s Day, January 1st, is a federal holiday, so all USPS post offices will be closed. Like on Christmas Day, there will not be regular mail delivery and only Priority Mail Express will have service on the holiday. Regular mail delivery will resume on Monday, January 3rd.
Holiday shipping deadlines
If you procrastinate on your holiday shopping, you may spend the weekend before Christmas fighting crowds. Many retailers have limited in-store inventory, so it’s better to prepare by checking online inventory at big box stores.
Keep in mind that FedEx, UPS, and USPS have varying shipping deadlines for guaranteed delivery before Christmas. The longer you wait, the more you’ll spend on expedited shipping.
